冻顶乌龙的名称源自冻顶山。相传清代台湾人从福建武夷山引进茶苗，在冻顶山种植，逐步发展出独特的工艺。
冻顶乌龙的工艺属于半发酵。发酵程度较轻，让它更接近绿茶的清香，但又有乌龙茶的醇厚。
冻顶乌龙的独特工艺是"布球揉捻"。这种工艺让茶叶卷曲成球形，冲泡后茶叶在杯中缓缓舒展，极具观赏性。
正宗的冻顶乌龙冲泡后有"绿叶镶红边"的特征。茶汤金黄明亮、香气浓郁、滋味醇厚，是乌龙茶中的精品。
